What an Airbnb Cleaner Checks Besides Cleaning

Between two guests, a professional turnover covers more than cleaning. The crew starts by inspecting the property, tests what the next guest will use in the first hour (lights, TV and remotes, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, locks and the main appliances), and finishes with photos and a message telling the host the unit is ready. When something does not work, it is reported, not repaired: fixing it is maintenance, and that is a separate job.

The cleaning itself, from linens to restocking, is covered in what hosts need between every guest. This post is about the part around it.

What does the cleaner check on arrival?

The visit starts with an inspection, before a single surface is cleaned. In our Airbnb checklist, the crew:

  • records the arrival time
  • checks the overall condition of the property
  • looks for visible damage
  • verifies that nothing listed in the unit is missing
  • checks for belongings the last guest left behind
  • photographs any damage or irregularity
  • reports what it found to the host or the property manager

The order matters. Once cleaning starts, the evidence of how the previous guest left the place is gone. Inspecting first is what separates "the guest broke this" from "it broke during the clean", and it is the record a host needs if they decide to file a damage claim.

Which things get tested before the next check-in?

Every turnover in our checklist includes a functionality check of eight things a guest touches almost immediately:

  1. Lighting in every room
  2. TV, to confirm it turns on and works
  3. Remote controls
  4. Wi-Fi, to confirm it is working
  5. Air conditioning and heating
  6. Locks and latches
  7. Essential appliances
  8. Smoke detectors, by visual inspection

That last one deserves precision. A visual inspection means the crew looks for a detector that is missing, hanging loose or visibly disconnected. It is not a test of the alarm itself, and a host who needs that tested should schedule it as maintenance.

Why does a working remote matter as much as a clean bathroom?

Because guests judge a stay by what fails, and a dead remote or a router that will not connect is a failure they notice within minutes of walking in. A spotless kitchen does not make up for a television nobody can turn on.

In Fort Lauderdale, the air conditioning is the clearest case. A guest arriving from the heat finds out in the first minute whether the unit cools, so checking it before they arrive costs a few seconds and saves the host a message that starts the stay on the wrong foot.

What happens when something is broken?

It gets photographed and reported to the host, and the cleaning crew does not try to repair it. Maintenance and repair are outside a cleaning visit, along with a few other things our checklist excludes:

  • mold remediation and biohazard cleanup
  • surfaces that need more than a two-step ladder
  • moving furniture heavier than 25 lbs (11 kg)
  • heavy decluttering and removal of excessive trash

None of these is the crew avoiding work. Each one needs either different equipment, different training or a different trade, and the useful thing a turnover can do is tell the host early, while there is still time to call the right person before check-in.

The same logic applies to condition. The result of a turnover depends on how the previous guest left the unit, so excessive buildup, severe stains or damage are flagged rather than absorbed into the normal visit.

What does the host get at the end?

A message that the unit is ready, and photographic documentation of how it was left. Before that message goes out, the crew runs a final inspection: the whole property clean, supplies restocked, beds made, bathrooms and kitchen ready, no unpleasant odors.

For a host who manages the listing from far away, those photos are the part that replaces being there. They show the state of the unit at the moment the cleaning ended, which is exactly what is needed if a guest later says something was wrong.

Does the outside of the property count?

The entrance, the outdoor furniture and a visual look at the pool or spa are part of the same visit. The crew sweeps the main entrance, cleans and arranges the outdoor table and chairs, clears trash from outdoor areas and tidies the leisure space.

The pool check is visual, like the smoke detectors: it catches something obviously wrong, it does not replace pool maintenance.

How many checkpoints is that in total?

Our Airbnb cleaning service runs more than 80 cleaning, inspection and preparation checkpoints per turnover, and it carries a 24-hour quality guarantee. If something on the list was missed, it gets fixed. Extras that are not part of every turnover, such as an additional linen change, grill cleaning or hard water treatment on shower glass, are on the list of add-on cleaning services.
